Two sisters aged three and five have died after they were trapped in a sweltering hot car for seven hours when they climbed inside to play.
The shocking incident took place in the city of Bengbu in the eastern Chinese province of Anhui.
The young sisters were found by their grandfather inside their uncle’s car, which was parked outside the family home.
According to reports, the granddad was looking after the girls while their mother – the family’s main breadwinner – was at work.
Neighbours told local media that the father has health problems and is unable to work.
At the time the girls went missing, the grandfather was reportedly taking an afternoon nap and did not discover their bodies until the evening.
Authorities believe the sisters were playing inside the car, which had been left unlocked.
However, for unknown reasons they were unable to open the door to get out.
A police spokesperson said that the uncle had parked his car outside the home and went to do some jobs.
The family member claims he locked the car with his remote, but that it is possible one of the car doors was not shut properly.
Temperatures in Bengbu reached 36 degrees Celsius (96 degrees Fahrenheit) on the day that the young sisters died.
Last month, a four-year-old boy was found dead inside an overheated vehicle in the central province of Hunan after his parents left him inside to run some errands.
